I recommend the Scion xA and Honda Fit for low sticker price ($12,780 and $13,850, respectively), maximum fuel efficiency (31 mpg city, 38 highway) and cargo space/flexibility. The Toyota Yaris (34 city, 39 highway) is also worth looking at, but getting one loaded will cost you about the same or more than either the xA or the Fit, which both have an impressive lineup of standard features. The Yaris is also smaller, but will save you money if you want to go without amenities like power locks or want to save every last drop of gas. I like the liftback model myself, but it's only as good as the Fit or xA if you get it with a folding rear seat.

Before you buy a car, go to insurancehotline.com or insurancequotes.com to compare insurance rates for different kinds of cars. College students don't have a lot of money. Some of kinds of cars, such as sports cars, even if you don't intend to drive recklessly in them, are still high in insurance costs.

It depends whether you going to buy it yourself, if not, be happy with what you get.
