A laptop is exactly like a computer(except the memory is less) and is portable. It works on a battery so it is very convenient.

Welcome to the IT World.
Understand that the terminology , get a bit getting use to.
Laptop is just a marketing term given to a computer of a certain type, it was used in a certain age of computers, (late 80s, early 90s). But the term struck.
Before Laptops, PC were boxes that sat on Tables, on on the floor. Laptops were smaller PC that could fit on Lap, but the next term Notebooks, (Think Legal Pads size) offers smaller PC.
Then PDA, (Palm Pilot) Smart phone and now...
Learn History, understand where they fail, as the assumption then may not be valid now.
Early 90s, people were talking about NC, Network computers, system with little OS on them, didn't take off. But now, we have application on the Internet, akin to the ideas as spell-ed out in NC system.

Laptop is a mobile portable personal computer
Desktop sits on desk
Laptop can sit on your lap, literally .. and u can comfortably work on it; hence name - laptop !
Functions same as desktop, but being smaller it's a bit specialised
Mostly used by people who need to carry it along with them
- sales and marketing, plant engineering, top executives on the move ....

the word "laptop"should be really"notebook"as using a computer on your lap is "according to the e.u"bad for your health
its laughable but apparently you can become sterile
in the computer world we use the word "desktops" for computers were they have a seperate monitor(other common names"towers","p.c,s","systems"),these are very popular as they can be easily upgraded, such as adding graphic or sound cards and upgrading a cd-rw(compact disc.re-writable) to a dvd-rw(digital versatile disc.re-writable)
you then have notebooks(other names"laptops""portables","desktop replacements"),these have the added flexibility of being very light and easy to carry about, allthough desktop replacements can weigh up to 6.5 kg,but this is due to the amount of high grade components they put in them
finally there are tablet and p.d.a(personal desktop assistant) these are even smaller than notebooks, but can only use a slow processor(800mhz in a p.d.a)and 1.2ghz in a tablet, but they are mainly only used by proffesinal people (nurses, teachers)
if you need any advice on anything ,as you are new to computers ,do not hesitate to email me for help
good luck
