A long time ago before there were computers, libraries had card catalogs. These were wooden cases with drawers. The drawers contained cards that had information about the books. Every time a new book came into the library someone would type up the cards you mentioned. The title card had the name of the book at the top and then all the other info-- author's name, call number, a brief description, basically the same info you find when you look up a book on the library computer. The author card had the name of the author at the top. The subject card had the subject at the top. You could look books up by subject,.That would be like doing a key word search. Or you could look them up by author or title. I don't remember separate cross reference cards. God, I miss card catalogs. Computers just aren't the same.
