I'm not positive, but I think the population is roughly the same (per capita, or course!) but it is not nearly as out-in-the-open. I mean, I wouldn't be concerned for my safety, but I wouldn't go looking for gay bars except maybe in Hong Kong.

I guess the real answer is how open can chinese people feel about themselves, their lives and whether they have any control over who they are. My guess is that chinese probably feel no more threatened than a homo in Kansas. YIKES!!!! a scary thought lol

Shanghai has a cool gay scene, really big apparently. I live in Hong Kong... not so good here. Everyone is in relationships. To answer your question--- its pretty gay! and not illegal like in Malasia, singapore etc.
