OK, my friend sent me a link in AIM that I should have tooken my first instinct on by not clicking on it, and it's been causing problems. I am running Windows 2000 SP4. The problems:

1. I have a "Mirar Toolbar" and a toolbar that just says "Search" installed on my computer. I have already tried to go in and remove the program, but it tells me I don't have the prilveliges to do it. I'm the only one who uses this computer.

2. It continues to pop up with different websites offering me stuff that I don't need. It's like whenever I type in any web address, something pops up and bothers me. I have already tried raising my cookie level and that doesn't seem to work.

3. My Norton AntiVirus and Grisoft's AVG Free continues to pop and tell me that I have a trojan horses on my computer. I have went in and had each one go and delete it for me. But every time I log off, they seem to reappear. I have went in and tried to delete it manually but that has to no prevail either. What to do now?

OK, I got rid of the Mirar Toolbar and stuff with Norton. I had already had Spybot and Ad-Sense. They cleaned my computer too, but I'm still having problems. Could someone explain what file this is:
C:\drsmartload45i.exe

I have never heard of that. I have plenty more, but Yahoo! gives you limited characters. Please, e-mail me at sunshine74012@hotmail.com. I'd really appreciate it.

It still shows that I have trojan horses on my computer. But they told me last night that they were gone. What is the problem now? Should I just go and get a new computer?

Again, everytime I delete the files manually and empty my recycle bin the files magically appear again. I don't know why, but one, a certain one, runs a process on my computer and every time I'm not looking, it comes back. The name of this one is: dfndra_1.exe

I have no idea why this is happening to me, other than I clicked on a link in AIM and it took me to a zip file, I unzipped it, and every since then I've been having problems. I'm begging you people, please help.

I'm also having problems with pop-ups, should I go and get the Yahoo! Toolbar for that one? I'm just sick of this ****. I see why people say we don't need all this. Causes way too much problems.

I've been able to deal with nearly every malware that I've come across using just 3 tools. AVG, which you've got. Lavasoft's Ad-aware (an adware detection and removal tool) and Spybot Search and Destroy (a spyware and malware detection and removal tool). Both are free for download.

These tools can gut software if it's files are infected, but normally a re-install of the software will return all to normal.

Well I agree with the poster above me about turning off system restore, for now anyways, than you could go on the net to a on-line scanner called (ewido.net) follow the simple instructions, and yes it is a free one to use. It will take some time to run but the end result is satisfaction. Also run spybot also, you can google these for their websites. Make sure you run each one everyday so you can check for updates added daily too.

You have a lot of work ahead of you, sad to say. Use Norton and follow their procedure to remove Mirar adware. Here is the procedure:
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.mirar.html
Exit AVG first before using Norton.
It is almost never good practice to use 2 anti-virus solutions at the same time. They can conflict and actually leave you with less protection than either one alone.
Good luck.

You have Spyware.

I get it alot. alot of people ask to use my computer and they download stuff.

hit it with everything you can think of sometimes it takes more than one program or scan to find one that can fix things. Here are some of the things I like to do, and of course I use mostly free stuff.

I spent like 80 bucks on a zone alarm I run first, it never catches anything. Most of the stuff that gets cleaned is found by all these free online programs. The program I paid for usually misses them. SO the free ones are pretty good.

Go to this free spyware scan website and run it

http://www.spywareinfo.com/xscan.php

go to this one too http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

Usually after I do all that I go to Panda Scan but there you have to write down the stuff it finds and manually delete it. You might have to boot your computer in safe mode and then delete the stuff thats left over so you have to write down the location that pops up on panda scan. The bit defender and xcleaner auto removes stuff but panda doesnt unless you pay, so you have to write down the location of each on. thats why I save it for sort of last.

(the locations might look like C://documents and settings/main user/blah blah )
its a booger picking them out. If it tells you you "cant" delete something start in safe mode and then you can.

finally stop by pc pitstop just to make sure its whistling dixie and running optimally. by the way, all that stuff is free.

you can also download a free version of adaware, its pretty good.

Aim is evil it pretends it's running so you can remove the pieces. I forgot how solved that problem... I went to the program files and deleted all AOL files. It name some files different things too so I did a search for all AOL. cause that's when i got the virus.

Hello Love's Unkind,

I like to surf and asnswer question that I understand and I know your problem and answer all to well! you need to disable system restore after that reboot in safe mode and then go in and delete it then do a cleandisk and defrag (in safe mode) when you do the cleandisk check all the boxes then goto nore options and delete all restore points but the most recent one option at the bottom then defrag and then turn on safe mode and create a new restore point! and reboot . hope this works for you F1 will help you get to where you want to get to on your computer.

You probably need to run Ad-Aware SE Personal . Google has a great download now that includes this, along with Norton (all others are add-ons, but good ones nonetheless)www.pack.google.com
Or, you can download the program separately
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
The privileges on your puter .. go to the Control Panel....and select user accounts.. whatcha got in there?

It probably has put code in to reinstall when you reboot. Identify the Trojan and do a google search on removal tools.

http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/ - this is a free spyware program that will remove spyware and cookies from your computer.
