Don't drive us crazy with idiotic comments like there are no fair generalizations, that is only flaunting ignorance. GENERALIZATIONS hold true for the MAJORITY of a group. We generalize in science all the time. Are we immune to our own scrunity? Please limit your commentary on the validly of the question and answer the question if you have a valid answer. In that way we, we get something done and no one makes a fool of themselves.

We are free to be whatever we want to be... including stupid, fat and lazy.

I think that most Americans are quire selfish as a result of isolation. There use to be a time when people really cared about their fellow man and the struggles they were having. I do not feel that is the case anymore and that most Americans could care less. WE are a nation of spoiled brats that cant begin to see how we can help someone in real need because we choose not to interact or get involved with anyone that might be needy in the first place. WE are a nation that has failed each other in the maintenance of the constitution and see to it that our rights are not infringed upon because unless it is directly pertaining to us, at any given point, then we could care less. WE are so self absorbed.

Americans have MUCH too much trust in their government and media.

I am American.

I really wonder about this question, or rather, the answers. One must consider that whatever each person says, it's almost assumed that they(the answerer) believe that they are not in that category they just named, but that the vast majority of Americans are.

Maybe that's the best generalization of Americans.

Fat is certainly not a fair generalization of Americans, because there are far to many thin Americans. Of course, that is assuming you are referring to their physical state. Even if 80% of Americans were fat(and it's less) I don't think that'd be enough to be a fair generalization. Just my opinion though.

The only fair generalization I can come up with is that most Americans live in geographical locations known as North and South America. The diversification of those peoples living in the Americas is a vast, if not more so, than those who live anywere else.

Americans are one of the few barbarian nations that kill their own wounded (not limiting it to merely physical wounds either.)

Our people are starving - we are sending billions in foreign aid to other nations.

Our people are not paid a decent wage for a day's work - our government is outsourcing everything to India and Pakistan.

Divorce rates are above 50% - but the government won't let same sex couples get married because it will "destroy" the family.

Familicide (killing members of your own family, particularly your children), child abuse and child molestations are committed by heterosexuals 98% of the time according to recent statistics yet our government won't let gay people be foster parents or adopt because it might "harm" the children. Yeah, guess our government thinks the kids are better off dead than having a gay parent.

The spiritual community is split into hundreds of factions because of denominational squabbling, name calling, and backstabbing, yet our current Adminitration is promoting the Christian religion as the national religion and condemning anyone who dares to disagree.

Yeah, VERY civilized nation we have here....

I was once in Cancun talking with a girl at a bar. She asked where I was from and I said "America". She said "me too -- South America!" Needless to say I..um..didn't get her number.

With this in mind, I might be tempted to say "provincial". If you know our history, how independence is part of our heritage, and our propensity towards rebellion and a certain "the hell with what they think" attitude, I believe the characteristic we have aquired as a result is that we generally don't see too far beyond our own front door.

I know a number of Americans, both living in Canada and in the United States. I happen to feel that Americans are about as diverse as Canadians are. I enjoy working with my American clients. I tend to see some minor differences between Canadian and Americans though, in terms of culture: Americans tend to be more entrepreneurial and self-reliant; Canadians tend to be more conformist and interdependent. Americans are more assertive in almost all areas of their lives; Canadians tend to feel somebody else should look after some of these things. There's good and bad in both of these sides, but in general - I don't have anything against Americans.

When you boil it all down every country is a piece of ****. America, however, surpasses every other, in my opinion, in being the most unappreciative. We have it "all" and we don't really know hardship which leaves us running around like scared rabbits when something goes wrong. We're always asking why? Where was God? and other such silly questions.

OMG what a gift of a question. LOL

There are good and bad people everywhere you go in life.
But its always the bad ones we remember the most.

Like the one I chatted to recently. When I told him where I was from, Australia, he asked me what state of the USA it was in.
My reply, "Have you ever used an atlas sweetie"?
