You don't say whether you are auditioning for a school show, a community theatre or amateur production, or a regional theatre production, so I can only give you some general advice.

Unless you are specifically asked to sing a song from the show you are auditioning for, don't. Pick a song of a similar style (show tune, standard, etc.) that you connect with emotionally AND that shows off your voice at its best. I can't tell you what specific song as I don't know you or your voice. Stay away from songs every one does( Disney! If I hear Colors of the Wind or A Whole New World at another audition, I'll scream!), unless you know you can make it special.

Also, Find out if there is time limit or a maximum length; many auditions only want 16 or 32 bars of a song.

Okay don't listen to about 10 of the people who answered. If you're audition for a musical theater production you need to audition with a musical theater song.

Louise sings mezzo, but you should be fine. Songs you should prepare from the show: Let me Entertain you and Little Lamb.

If you use an outside song...pick one based in the 1920's because thats when the show takes place.

If I were you I would prepare a song from Gypsy AND another song that is completely different. That way, you can sing whatever they require at the audition. Just make sure you find a good pianist to rehearse with you. Break a leg!

It is totally "correct" to sing a song from the play.Remember some songs although beautiful have been done to death ,like...Tomorrow(from Annie)and Over the rainbow(Wizard of Oz)etc.....Sing something your comfortable with and will show your range.BREAK A LEG!!!♥

I would agree with another poster here, prepare two songs, one from the show that is the part you are auditioning for, and another comparable musical theatre/period song. I might suggest "Let Me Entertain You" and "Pretty Baby."

The only things that comes to mind is "Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves" by Cher and the "Last Unicorn" by America.
