trying to determine if desktop and laptop using same router are on separate private lines?

Yes if you have a firewall your computers will be safe. The VPN tunnel you are probably useing is eithere PPTPv2 which is safe to connect to work or IPSec which is also safe to use to connect to work. Picture a direct line to work that is only connecting your laptop and work. The desktop is safe from work or hackers and your laptop is too. Just make sure you have the latest anti-virus and anti-spyware programs loaded up on your computers. Also make sure you have firewalls on both and they should be very safe.

I have the same thing but with verizon and they say that it is but I do not think so what goes through the router goes out over the net unless you disconnnect the phone line and disable the wireless then it may be totally safe
