It depends on where and why you want to travel. I have lived in Japan and China and have come to know how to travel like a tourist and a local...but it depends on your skills. Your best bet would be to find a travel partner or make a local friend. Most people can't speak the language when they travel to different countries so it's harder to get around and not get cheated. But depending on where you're going you can find others from your home country to help.

I and many of my friends are teachers in different countries and don't mind helping out someone who's just looking around our new homes. Many of us haven't been home in years and we find that meeting tourists give us some updates on what's really going on at home.

Another thing I have found is that you can WORK and be a tourist! Many older people come to China for the summer as English teachers and in turn use other teachers/ students as travel guides...and it practically pays for itself! I am pretty sure they have things like that in most countries too. AND then you don't have to worry about where you will live, who will pick you up at the airport and what will you do if you're stranded. That's also a good note to remember even if you are not going as a teacher. If you really do need help...look to an English school and they probably have English speaking locals or teachers that can point you in the right direction.

Many overseas women persons get sexually assulted or robbed in places like Phuket, regrettably using women persons being in a overseas u . s . and the terror and intimidation of going to an (at perfect) insensitive police it would not get suggested or isn't believed through the close by police who do not favor the city getting a nasty rep, undesirable i understand yet real none the a lot less. the speed of crime on vacationers has dramatically higher over the perfect 15 years and the acceptance that Thailand enjoys of Thais being non violent passive people is not any longer real, a minimum of no longer in the lodges the position the very worst of the worst congregate. Phuket is maximum absolutely no longer a secure position for a lady to be travelling on my own, through all skill bypass and luxuriate in Thailand only no longer on my own, it isn't a secure position for a unmarried female.
