I am a diehard Firefox fan but I have not totally thrown away Internet Explorer.
Firefox has many really nice features not found in internet explorer such as tabbed browsing, a download manager, the ability to do RSS feeds, themes, and a lot of awesome plugins to add functionality.
Some people argue that Firefox is much more secure and it does seem to be that way. In my opinion the thing that makes Firefox bettters is the fact that it is nor embedded in the Operating system. Firefox is a program that runs in Wondpws. Fi it gets hijacked or messed up, you can simply remove it and reinstall and you are back in business.
Try that with Internet Explorer! You cannot remove it. Internet Explorer is so tightly integrated with the operating systems that when it gets hijaked or messed up the entire windows installation can be jeopardized.
Try this simple demo. Open internet explorer and go to a site like www.yahoo.com. After you get there type c:\ in the address bar and hit return. Look familiar? It should! It is the Windows Explorer. The heart and core of the user interface is explorer but it is also internet explorer. They are one and the same. So if your internet explorer gets hijacked or messed up the entire windows installation is going to be unstable.
Bottom line: I use internet explorer under two circumstances.
First you have to have it to update windows using Microsoft Update
Next I use it for those sites that refuse to work properly with anythng but Internet Explorer

The reason that you need to use Internet Explorer isn't because they don't want you using other browsers, it's because IE is deeply integrated with Windows and has specific programming for them to verify your Windows OS or whatnot. Problem perhaps if you're pirating, though most of the time it can't really detect that. They're pretty crappy about it. But it also has controls which do scan your computer, and tells it what updates you already have. Otherwise, it can't tell you which ones you might actually need. You can look at Microsoft Security Bulletins to know what patches have been released to solve security issues. And if you really just don't want updates to install automatically, you can have it tell you when it has updates, to download then inform you of the updates, and then have you select which ones you want installed. If you really want to do everything manually, you may just need to get familiar with how the Microsoft TechNet site, their site for IT Technicians and Microsoft Professionals, is organized. Because that's where you're going to find the real information on what's going on and when an update is critical. But it's not too easy to navigate.

At the moment, Firefox seems to be the most secure and easily customizable browser out there. =)
I definately recommend getting that.
However, Internet Explorer 7 BETA, is also pretty good. Though it's still in the beta, and still has bugs to work out, it's pretty stable and can be used as a main browser. However, I think when IE7 is officially released, it will take over Firefox. =))))

Sounds like you're trying them both, so just determine which "you" like the best. Make sure you keep either one updated.
It could be each time you choose the other browser it asks you if you want to make it the default browser. If you say yes each time, which ever one you were using last will be the one that starts by default the next time. If you prefer one over the other then say No when choosing the less preferred browser and the preferred one will always start as the default.
