When people say they don't consider rap music what I think they mean to say is that they don't consider rap singing and rap isn't singing it's rapping. I mean I personallty don't like country music, but I still consider it music. Before you mention all the bad content that you hear in rap music as your answer, please think about the question.

I agree with everything you're pretty much saying. Rap is music, it's just a different type of music which is called a genre. I think that most people don't consider rap music because they're ignorant. Ignorant meaning that they don't understand rap music.

Actually, they're idiots. Music is music. What's next? Bach and Beethoven isn't music because there's no singing? Come on people. For centuries music didn't have vocals at all. So why should the fact that someone is talking or singing or screaming or growling make a difference in what is music and what isn't.

Music is about beats, melodies, chords, and notes. It's not about singing or rapping.

And rap is in fact an artform. Isn't poetry art? That's what rap is. It's poetry set to a beat and music..

Rap is kind of unique in that you either love it or really, really hate it! There isn't a whole lot of music, in spite of some good beats and you are correct about the lack of singing, as part of the reason. I know that for me, with all due respect, it really brings out the worst in me. I can only tolerate a few seconds of it as it really kind of makes my blood boil.
Didn't always feel that it was all bad, just not very appealing. I do consider "Rapper's Delight" an absolute classic, though! In addition, the vulgarity has much to do with people disliking it.

It is not music or art, music has meaning and lyrics that stand for something. Rap is just talking fast that originated in the hood when people made fun of each other. Rock from the 60's-80's now thats music.

I hate rap, but I still say rap is music. It's not singing, but it is music. Country is way better than rap. I'm not a huge country fan, in case you were thinking that, I like to consider myself a metalhead.

For one thing rap sucks. But rap isn't music. They don't even sing. The beat always suck. They all have one theme...and that is bootyshaking/sex. The lyrics have no real meaning to them half the time. I mean music it supposed to be a way express yourself. The lyrics don't make sence half the time.

Because rap isn't music, it's crap. It takes very little talent to write a rap song and it has even less to say beyond anger, hate and volence. I'm surprised it's stuck around this long. No accounting for people's taste.

I dont consider rap music because it is basically poetry set to a synthesizer beat. i suppose is could be considered musical poetry. It is also all pretty much the same "kill that hoe kill that otha rappa for he be dissin me"... and if you are sitting there saying heavy metal is all the same. its not. in metal people sing about different things (religion VARIOUS hardships and other people) set to a musical backdrop of actual instruments.

im music lover.whether the artists rap, croons, screams in their songs,I 'll love em anyways.
well the young generations are mostly intuned with rap music compared to the older generations. rap music is more of its strong lyrical contents and the hip of each of its music beats.maybe if one love rhymes, one will love rap.
whenever i listen to hardcore rap music when my parents are around, they would give me a look like,''Whats that all about?''
It's only natural because the older generations cant relate to so much of rap as they are more accustomed to the more melodious musics..Somethin smooth..
Some prefers more mellow tunes that soothes the ear. Some prefers loud head banging music. Some prefers heart thumping rhythms and beats that you can boogie to.
However with all the fusion of different genres of music eg;Latin+hiphop ..some people tend to like the new change .
It all boils down to individual preferences.

I once explained it to a friend this way:

"The following is a mathematical proof:

>>>Rap is not music.

1.) According to answers.com, music is "the art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative composition, as through melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre."

2.) Shared properties of rap and music --> arranged sounds; rhythm; played on the radio

3.) Properties exclusive to music --> melody; harmony; timbre; pleasing to the ear; continuous, unified, and evocative composition; beauty; focuses the mind

4.) Properties exclusive to rap --> stupidity; imbecility; irritatingness; glaring lack of beauty; prevents the mind from focusing

QED, rap is not music.<<<"
