Please do not answer nonsensical stuff. I really really need help! I need to annotate this whole poem but I don't even understand it fully.

Basically, the poem is about having a trivial accident, a cutting of the thumb while slicing onions, this is then tied into famous incidents of bloodshed (the KKK, redcoats, etc). Some people believe this poem is about self-mutilation (cutting), and about the speaker deriving pleasure from this incident. In response to the other answer, the poem contains no rhapsodizing of the pain.

This poem was written for Susan Neill-Roe, who was a babysitter for Sylvia. I think this poem refers to an incident that Susan experienced, because it was unlike Sylvia to be involved in a lot of housewife things.

The poem is obviously about Plath cutting her thumb, and then rhapsodizing about the pain and gushing blood. Don't forget, she was depressive and suicidal -- eventually did commit suicide.
