If you are starting out with an AVI file, what would be the best format to convert it to so that you could watch it on TV in a regular dvd player. (Besides DVD formats of course)

If the best source you have is uncompressed (.AVI) then do not convert it to anything else, unless you want to lose quality.

If you want to watch it on any regular DVD player, it has to be converted to the DVD MPEG2 format.

There are some DVD players that play DIVX files. If you have one of those then convert it to DIVX only if you need it to take up less space on the disc. That is the only thing you will gain from it.

the best format is AVI with DivX codec, for compressed and small file size at no great cost of losing any clarity.
