What would be the best format besides DVD to have a video on a disc that you can watch on TV?

I want to burn videos on to CD, but I don't have a dvd burner. What is the next best option starting with an avi file?

VCD (for CD's)
or
SVCD (for CD's)

ONLY if the DVD player (the one hooked up to your TV) can support those formats...

16 by 9 wide screen...
4 by 3 for standard TV screen.
