Most effective would be to have it professionally cleaned. Second best is to rent a shampoo machine and do it yourself with the chemicals specifically made for smoke damage.

Buy a powdered carpet deodorizer and mix it with an equal amount of baking soda.Sprinkle it on the carpet,wait 15 minutes,then vacuum.Works very well for pet odors too!

Buy some Dyson Zorb from Lowe's - work it into the carpet w/some baking soda very well and leave it for a couple of hours. Then vacuum very well. Then Febreze the tar out of it. This does a good job.

Plain old Baby Powder! Sprinkle on liberally and leave overnight. Vacuum off. Repeat if you need to. I do mine about once a fortnight. Good Luck!

put several small bowls of vinegar in the room, and sprinkle the carbet with baking soda, set the bowls with vinegar in different places, it seems to draw the orders out of carpets, drapes, etc..
Also, if you sptrinkle baking soda on the carbet, and then sweep it up with a sweeper it also seems to neitralize the orders
