If you really mean softball (and not baseball), there are typically 10 players in the field, not nine.
The infield is the same as regular baseball:
-pitcher - pitches the ball to the batter, located on the mound in the middle of the infield, will sometimes cover first base in the even of a ground ball to the right side
-catcher - receives the ball from the pitcher, croutches behind home plate, covers home
-first - covers the area around first base, covers the bag especially on groundballs to get the runner out
-second - covers the area on the left side up the middle, sometimes covers second base in the event of a steal or possible double play
-third - covers the area around third base
- shortstop - compliment to the second baseman on the left side of the infield, also covers second in the event of a stolen base or double play
The difference between baseball and softball is in the outfield. You typically see one of two set-ups:
1) left, left-center, right-center, and right fielders, - all of these patrol their given area of the outfield
OR
2) left, center, right and short fielder (who plays a short outfield and shades on the side of second base where the batter would hit normally, i.e. right field for a lefty and left field for a righty, also called a rover).
