The fork and dish were set to be in an arranged marriage, all the while dish was tormented from being separated from her lover spoon. So at the witching hour, when the cow jumps over the moon, dish and spoon ran away. Unfortunately Fork, who watches the nightly cow jump before he retire for the night sees the two lovers flea. He tracks them down and in a bloody battle both spoon and fork die of their injures. Dish, as her lover dies, takes jumps off the table and shatters on the kitchen floor.
The End.

Because Jack and Jill fell down that hill and Humpty Dumpty had that great fall. There was that woman in the shoe with all those kids. There was that old man who hit his head and did not wake up in the morning. The spider freightened Ms. Muffet away. It's no wonder that the cow jumped over the moon and the spoon and fork ran away. It is no wonder that as a small child and listening to my mother recite all of these horrific nursery rhymes night after night I now find myself depressed.

One website says that the cow jumped over the moon (both were cabinet ministers) to please the queen. The dish (not fork) and spoon were two people who eloped - and were thrown into the dungeon upon their capture later on.

"In England's royal court, it was the custom to dub people with silly nicknames. Elizabeth I was often called “The Cat” from the way she fiddled with her Cabinet ministers as if they were mice. The cow, moon and her “lap-dog” were also characters in these court charades. The dish was Elizabeth’s serving lady and the spoon was, of course, the royal taster. When these last two secretly eloped, Elizabeth had them captured and confined to the Tower of London. Nobody fiddled with Elizabeth!"

Other sites say it was just a fun rhyme that made children giggle as it was nonsense. Either way, that is what it has become today, a rhyme to make children giggle when they use their imaginations.

Because the moon always wants to trip her and the spoon makes fun of her stocky figure while the fork is kind and sweet to her and they ran away together so nobody will understand their relationship.
Currently they are residing in France running an unsuccessful B&B but still very much in love

They were all having so much fun that the cow couldn't stand it and just jumped for joy. Only he jumped too high. And then the dish couldn't take any more and ran away with the spoon. And there you have it! :)

Hey diddle diddle,
The cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon,
The little dog laughed to see such fun,
And the dish ran away with the spoon.
