A cold war is an armed military confrontation where the gun barrels stay cold because shots are not actually bieng fired.
It is different from a ceasefire or standoff because those situations infer that a truce has settled in, whether one has been signed or not. But a cold war has no truce and is resolved by the defeat or anarchy of the loser.

At the height of the Cold War, the US discovered that Russia had been placing nuclear missiles in Cuba. On this date in 1962, President Kennedy announced the discovery of the installations and placed a naval "quarantine" (blockade) on Cuba to prevent the arrival of further Soviet shipments of military weapons. On Oct. 24, Russian ships carrying missiles to Cuba turned back, and when Nikita Khrushchev agreed on Oct. 28 to withdraw the missiles and dismantle the missile sites, the crisis was averted.

Cold War means there is no direct confrontation or battle. Only background disputes via silent threats and posturing. It's like a game of chess where you move all your pieces in place threatening the other person/team/country but don't actually start taking the opponents pieces away.

Cold war...is the opposite of hot war.
Usually when war is declared in the winter tempertures need to be below 32 degrees.
Wind chill factors can also increase the cold war. Cold wars can be prevented if both countries agree to wait until spring or summer when it is warmer.
