Two ways. You need a dvd drive in your computer to play them and then to copy them is no problem, just log on to the dvd drive and do the ol' drag and drop to some other folder. If you don't have a dvd drive, but you do have video in put on your computer, you can play the dvd video in to the Windows video recorder and generate the file in some folder. BUT get the coffee pot ready, because that takes forever.

Hi,
There are many ways to do this depending upon what you want the final result to be. And this technique will work if you don't have Nero.

first of all DVD's come in either single or dual layers. Single layers hold about 4.7 GB and dual layers are about double of that.

DVD's with all of the extra goodies often are larger than the 4.7 GB size so it is a problem to burn them unless the information is compressed.

if you look a the directory structure of a DVD you will normally see a folder called VIDEO_TS.
Inside that folder are all of the files necessary to play the movie. There may be extra files for additional content and for the fancy menu.

There are three kinds of files a .VOB and .BUP and a .IFO (don't ask what they stand for I am not really sure)

These files are also listed using a fairly common naming convention.
like VIDEO_TS.IFO usually for reserved for the root information file.
content will usually follow a naming convention like VTS_01_1.VOB

for example I wanted to copy King Kong. I didn't want any of the extras, just the movie and the DVD menu.

First I used a program called PowerDVD (comes standard with any MSI DVD player) or you can use another program. You can proabably find a copy easy enough. I think it's one of the better DVD playback software products around.

For my process, I usually look in the folder with the files and I start dragging the .VOB files onto the PowerDVD screen. It only takes a few moments to see what files are associated with just the movie.

In this case it was VTS_01_1.VOB thrugh VTS_01_5.VOB. VTS_01_0.VOB has the DVD Menu. Everything that concerned just the movie has a VTS_01_ prefix for the filename. Other content (extras) start with VTS_02_ ... or VTS_03_ etc.

Next I create a new folder and move those files into that folder.

Now here's where you have some choices. if you want to burn just the movie to a DVD then Nero has a DVD burn option where you select the .VOB files. If you just put in the files that have only the content for the movie then you get a DVD that just starts playing the movie when you start it up. For clarification just the .VOB files that contain the content of the movie. Nero assembles them into one big file.

Now playing just the files for the movie WITH the DVD menu all you need is the corresponding .BUP and .IFO flies.

So I copied the VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VTS_01_0.BUP and VTS_01_0.IFO files into the same directory as the rest of the content.

All you have to do to play the movie is to open your PowerDVD player and Select the Source, selecting "Open DVD file on hard disk drive"
Select either the VIDEO_TS.IFO or the VTS_01_0.IFO file and the DVD will start to play.

If the DVD does not have a lof of extra features then just copy the entire DVD to a new directory. For consistency, I create a VIDEO_TS folder. it's not necessary.

If you want to burn a DVD that is larger than 4.7 GB you need a program like Nero Recode which can compress the larger DVD to fit the smaller 4.7 GB size that most DVD+R DVD's are.

It takes about 20 minutes to copy a DVD to my hard drive.

Best thing to do is play with it and experiment. You will proably find out things that I don't know.

If you are recoding and/ or burning then you need something to take care of the copy protection.

I make personal copies of DVD's that I buy. AnyDVD is a product that can help with that.

I hope that helps and was not too confusing
