For those of you living in the UK and Ireland, what is your opinion of the US??

Question

I am an American and wonder with the war in Iraq and the N. Korea threats,political stuff going on here, what is your impression of the US? Have any of you traveled here and if so , what part of the country?? Take care!

WOW!! I must say that it is sad to hear the impression of my country is so poor!!
My only thought that i want to add is about our President and the current war with Iraq.We originally went to war with them after the 9/11 attacks.I believe we had the best of intentions on going over there. To finally have a president who will not take any crap and who will stand up to these terrorists and protect our country from another attack to the best of our ability.
Unfortunately, it has been difficult to deal with the kinds of people who do not think twice about torturing and brutally killing their own people let alone any american POW's. It is a very disheartening situation right now. We have many in my country who say to bring the military back home now, but what message does that send? If we stay to see this through and to hope to give the Iraqi people freedom, which they have never seen........how will that turn out?? I do beleive that at this point the only way is to unite as a country.

Hi, I am an Englishman and never visited the States. I suppose like many people I would have to say that I have had mixed feelings about the USA. Most of the information regarding world events etc comes via the media and does not I think always give the most unbiased opinion. Not just in political events. We all see popular shows like Oprah and this without doubt has a profoundly negative effect. We see in the main what can only be described as weirdos and have to wonder if these strange selfish people are indicative of the country as a whole.
High consumers, irresponsible ecological attitude and a me, me, me mind set.
All sounds horrible doesn't it? Thankfully there is the Internet where over the past couple of years I have made some excellent friends who have illustrated that there is a far more caring and unselfish, generous aspect to many of the citizens of the US than I previously thought.
My country and yours have been strong allies both economically and in time of conflict and shared a whole lot together. I personally hope that this will always be the case.
Who knows what may happen in Iraq, North Korea and the rest of the world. But I believe that in the main (although always influenced by oil) The forces currently in Iraq are trying extremely hard to bring about stability. If they were only allowed to do so, your country and mine could bring our troops home. The sooner the better.
In a nut shell I am pro American. OK?

I have never been to the US so I can only base my opinions of her on what I see and hear from accross the pond.

From what I hear, I assume their are a lot of nutters and freaks out there! What is that saying? Only in America!

On a more serious note, I think the policies of the administration have made a bad name for America. For all the talk of stopping terrorism and helping a people to become a democracy, the whole world knows that Bush invaded Iraq to gain control of the Oil. If Bush was so caring, he would have invaded other countries long before Iraq to free a people and stop them from being butchered.

I also think the world has become more concerned with global warming, whilst America doesn't seem to give a damn. The bigger the car the better in the good old U S of A.

But I love the movies that are made there, and most of the TV programmes too.
