should the timing chain snap at 49000kms. It actually did taking with it the cam, cam shaft etc with it. Or is it a problem with all newer diesal cars?

The 309 doesn't ,in fact have a timing chain but a toothed rubber belt as with the majority of cars nowadays. It should be replaced at, or even a bit less than the manufacturers recommended mileage intervals (don't know the actual figure for this engine but I would guess it to be about 60k miles). If it goes, it takes out everything with it, from the cylinder head joint upwards anyway, so it's worth taking care of!

There are no known issues with the car itself having any problems. Sometimes cars are renown for issues, but Peugeot's are generally good. I would hesitate to say the cause, but 'different' driving styles can add to the tension on the belt, for example driving the car hard all the time, from cold to hot, will eventually make it's life shorter. If the car had irregular timing, this would have caused tension on the belt thus causing wear to the connector teeth leading one to slip and then snap. Or a likely explaination could be some grit/stone gets caught witin the belt and stress fractures occour, causing a failure. I would personally change the belt every 40,000 miles, and I think the manufacturer would be a similar figure, but it does not hurt to look under the bonnet every week to check all looks normal, and sounds it too.
