I'll suggest you a few things thati have learbed from experience and talking to many successful people and i love they will help you decide.
1. Never choose a career option just becuase it has a good scope or has many jobs availabel as of now. The skills and the jobs requred in the economy keeps on changing every few years and its very much possible that by the time you are through with your studies, that stream is already facing a down trend
2. Always choose a career path which interests you and is close to your heart. If you do anything with passion and interest , you would excel in it and there is no dearth of opportunities for excellant people in any fiend
3. Always stay away from mediocrity. whatever you do ,give it your 100% because even taking a failure is much easier if your have tried hard whereas a success is also bitter if you got it the easy way
4. Archeology has many opportunities in India as well as other countries so dont feel like this.

Hahahaa...I thought you were talking about Sexually Transmitted Diseases also!!!
But seriously....I did my degree in Anthropology and had the same response from people, well if they even knew what it was. But you are right to worry about you future with Archeology. Both Archeology and Anthropology are not very popular jobs and even if you find a position your going to have to fight to get it. Your best bet is to go on to a Master or PHD if you are serious about Archeology because the only 'real' jobs are going to be research. Universities do find digs and things of that nature but I believe they are for staff and students mainly...which means you'd have to be staff. One part of Archeology that you may not have considered is Museum work. But again the higher degrees are taken first.
Archeology has a lot fewer related jobs that you can use your skills in then Anthropology so I would ask your professors about it. Remember they have a lot more time in the field then you do and know a lot more. Even if you are not their student anymore most professors will make time to see you and help you answer any questions about the job market. It makes them look good when they see their students are interested in the subjects they are teaching.
Check out any Archeology societies online...they usually have job tips and listings...if you can't find any try Anthropology societies. They are both closely related fields since one is living society and the other is extinct society.
Good luck.

The ASI (Archaeological Society of India) was in news a few days back for "imminent need of archaeologists *** divers" as they wanted to take up some projects related to under-ocean sunk-ships. And what! they had only four such specialist available all throughout the country! and they all were ageing off.. in their late 40s... ASI NEEDS FRESH PEOPLE LIKE YOU !!
Also, there's GSI (Geological Survey of India) and a whole lot academia in the country which demands your talent.. just go ahead...
Now, let me suggest the best way out... study your +2 with maths and science, secure your way out while you get these 2 years to analyse the opportunities in archaeology in detail, and then take a call... you can then get into graduation courses majoring in archaeology!
