I think you need to be more specific. Are you asking about artificial cloning (human intervention) or natural cloning?

If it is artificial, then the first record of an animal cloned is a newt by Hans Spemann in 1901/1902 (not entirely sure about the year)

However, natural cloning has been observed for time immemorial in the form of identical twins. Scientists have also found unicellular organisms that reproduce by fission, a process where the organism divides into two cells having the same DNA.

So I'd say cloning, in the truest form, occured a few billion years after the "Big Bang" happened.

Dolly the sheep was certainly NOT the first animal to be cloned. She was the first mammal to be cloned. Frogs and lizards had already been cloned.

I suspect that the first cloned animal was a one celled organism.

NOT Dolly!!!

Dolly was the first MAMMAL to be cloned from an ADULT cell.
But they've been doing amphibians, reptiles, invertebrates, and bacteria long before.

I'd say the first was probably a bacteria of some kind.
