of getting a serious academic reply?

True, sometimes I get really insightful answers, but when I have a question requiring an answer from a person educated in a subject, I often get answers that rattle off opinions or go off on wordy tangents. I had one person who on more than one occasion claims to be a professor and gives erroneous information.

It's like anything.
You always have to double check for yourself.
But you will get at least a direction in which to go to for more information.

Keep in mind, even the "real" experts are not always correct.

I have come across other question/answer sites but nothing even remotely similar to this.

Yes but probably not a general one like this. You'd have to find one that specializes in your particular discipline. I found a lot of good math sites once. You just have to google like crazy.
