I would like to stop Norton (it wants more money for the year) and the SBC server protection (it tells me I can only use it )and just use Firefox. Is that wise? I am not literate with computer/internet needs/terminology.

IMO firefox is the best secured browser in the world so far

so feel safe to surf the web w/ firefox

i hate norton

use Zone Labs internet Security which has the best firewall

and heres a full guide to protect ur computer

1. Make sure your box is up to date.
Turn on automatic updates and make sure your windows comp is fully updated.
If you don't want to install service pack II then don't. It adds some
extra security but i haven't seen that much of a difference in my comps.

2. Password protect the guest user.
To password protect the guest user click Start, All Programs, then click
Accessories, and then select Command Prompt. Then when the black box pos up type
in: net user guest typeyourpasswordhere
This will secure the guest account.

3. Turn on the Internet Connection Firewall.
Of course if you have a 3rd party firewall then turn that on as the built in
firewall only monitors incoming traffic, but if not here is how you turn it on.
Go into your Control Panel and select Network Connections, then right click on
the internet connection you have and select Properties, then click the Advanced
tab and there you can turn on or off your internet connection firewall.

4. Use private folders
This secures your folders from anyone with shared access to your comp.
To make a folder private right click on it and select Properties, then
select Sharing, then click Make this folder private.

5. Use limited user accounts for everyday use.
When you use your administration account that gives you and anyone else with
access to it full privileges. So malware and other malicious software can
easily damage your comp. to create limited user accounts go to your Control
Panel, select User Accounts, there you can create or edit existing accounts.

6. Use firefox for browsing the web
You don't have to do this, but i have found that it helps a lot with not letting
spyware, adware, or viruses get on your pc.

7. Regularly scan your pc
You should regularly scan your pc for viruses, spyware, or other malware. You
can get some very good free scan and removal software from around the net.

Using Norton Antivirus :

Ideally, I should think that Norton Anti-Virus will ask you to update it , of course, when you are connected to internet. Thus, you look at the back of your computer, especially , if its a laptop, there is a sticker that has the product key for Norton. Right click on the Norton Icon on the Start bar ( right bottom corner) and choose the option of update. Follow the steps for updating.

You can download ( search , say in google), Anti -Viruses like Stinger, AVG and install them in your machine. This, in my view, will help you in case you dont want to use Mozilla Firefox

Best results and best regards,

firefox is good, its in my "safest browser" list. Cauze it will scan the pages u are viewing for potential harmful threats however, it is not 100% safe. So dun rely too much on it. Norton & McAFee are key to protecting your com, u dun wish yr com to be infected unless u dun use the internet explorer.

Additional Infomation:
I recieved your msg,

From: cassandra

Subject: Norton, etc

Message: Thanks for info. Can I use Norton and Firefox together. would I want to? Is McAfee different from or part of Norton. I am unfamiliar with name of McAfee.

Yes, you can use Norton and Firefox together. Firebox is a browser while Norton is an anti-virus software. McAfee is just another anti-virus software which i highly recomend, however im looking under your case, McAfee also requires users to pay. If you seek for a free anti-virus software however not very recomended by me is , AVG. Check out the web and you will find it, its a software by Gifsoft (if im not wrong).

I would invest in a linksys router for a firewall and there are some virus scans online that are free but there is nothing better than norton. Look for an educational or corporate one. Best thing to do is go on ebay every year and buy it there. That is the cheapest you will find it. A web browser does not stop viruses and software firewalls take up too many resources. It might be worth checking http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ or also do a search on google or yahoo for free virus scan.

no definately not.fire fox is only a ffirewall-not an antivirus remover.there are heaps of free antivirus software,--i could list them all but ithink it is better that you do this just for the exersise of doing it.Go to the top of the page to the dark green bar where it says--search for questions and type in there--free antivirus programs.Open all the questions and answers up and copy the sites to download them.after that you can search for free anything you type in-you wont regret it its like a dictionary of the whole program and saves you 5 points as you dont have to ask--just browse.
