This is the first World Cup in awhile that the "golden goal" rule is not in effect.
In past years, when a knockout-round game ended tied, the two teams would play an extra period (30 minutes, I think) and the team that scored first in that extra period was declared the winner. Hence that goal was called the "golden goal" since it automatically ended the game.
Now there is no golden goal rule. If a team scores in overtime, the extra 30-minute period continues; the other team has the rest of the time to catch up.
Note to previous post: the "silver goal" rule has also been eliminated - it's back to the old-fashioned 30-minute-extra-time, play-it-out-until-time's-up rule.

If a match is tied after regulation, there are certain ways to decide a game.
You can play extra time with the Silver Goal rule, where there are two 15 minute periods. If a team scores in the first 15 minutes, the other team get a chance to score in the second 15 minutes. If it's still tied after both, they go to a shoot out.
With the Golden Goal rule, there is an extra period played and the first team to score (the golden goal) wins the match.

a golden goal is the goal scored in the extra time which wins the match for the scoring team even if there is more time left of the extra time. for eg if team A scores a goal in the 2nd minute of the first half of the extra time, the match ends then and team A wins the match.
this rule was introduced to end a match in the actual play rather than in the penalty shootout, especially after 1994 world cup final match between Brazil and Italy which is the only final to be decided by the penalty shootout.
the rule however has been removed from the game and the teams play the full extra time and if necessary, penalty shootout.

Golden goal means the first goal scored by a team after the game ended in a draw after 90 minutes and the team is the winner. But now, they don't apply golden goal anymore, it's silver goal.

It's overtime and the first team to score wins. From now until the end of the World Cup if a game is tied at the end of regulation the game will go into two 15 minute halves of non golden goal overtime and if nobody has won it will go into a Penalty Shootout.

IN SOME TOURNAMENTS WHEN SOCCER MATCHES HAVE GONE 90 MINUTES WITH NO RESULT,AN EXTRA 30 MINUTES ARE PLAYED. THE FIRST TEAM TO SCORE IN THOSE 30 MINUTES WIN. THE MATCH ENDS RIGHT AWAY EVEN IF ONE MINUTE IS PLAYED. AT THE END OF THE 30 MINUTES THERE IS A PENALTY SHOOTOUT.
