The question of which city is the largest is often confused by political divisions which separate contiguous urban areas into different cities by name, even when the city for all intents and purposes extends over the entire region, such as Dallas and Fort Worth, or the entire set of burroughs that combine to form New York City. Many of these regions are also surrounded by additional urbanized areas that can extend the 'city' even further.
According to Demographia World Urban Areas (World Agglomerations 2006) New York City is the largest city, at 3,353 square miles (8,683 square km). Including the entire urban area around New York City (New York, Bridgeport (CT), New Haven (CT), Trenton (NJ), Danbury (CT) and Hightstown (NJ)) it comes to 4,325 square miles (11,202 square km).
In comparison, Mexico City is only 800 square miles. The area of Tokyo-Yokohama comes in second in the world at 2,700 square miles. My own city of Edmonton is a mere 328 square miles. Hong Kong is a puny 85 square miles. However, there's 6.5 million people packed into that 85 square miles.
In terms of population, Tokyo is the tops at 33,200,000 people. New York comes second at 17,800,000. Sao Paulo, Brazil has nearly the same population as New York at 17,700,000 but the Sao Pauloites are crammed into just 760 square miles. That's a little too crowded for me.
