Cookies are small files that websites can cause to be stored on your computer. They contain information about your activity at that site. If Yahoo remembers who you are when you visit the site, it's because the site created a cookie on your computer the last time you logged in.
Cookies are somewhat controversial because they are also used by marketing companies to track what you do on the web. For this reason, it is best to set your browser to refuse third party cookies, and to frequently use a spyware remover to root out tracking cookies. You can also manually manage your cookies; your browser's help menu can tell you how.

Cookies are small data files stored on your computer by sites you visit. Typically, they hold things like usernames and login authentication strings for sites. Some may hold your preferences for some sites, and some just make a record that you visited a site on a certain date and time. They serve two purposes that I know of: to save disk space on the sites' servers, and to help record data as you navigate a site. You can usually delete them with no ill effects, but you may have to log in to some sites for which you selected "Remember Me on This Computer" the last time you logged in.

When you go to a website, I think that the site automatically downloads things to your computer called cookies. But from what ive heard, you can delete them if they are taking up too much space.
