She's fine. Some women gain more than recommeneded (25-30 pounds). She was small to began with, so it's more than likely no big deal - unless she has a condition like gestational diabetes.
Where does all the extra weight go?
Here is an approximate breakdown of your weight gain:
Baby = 7 pounds
Placenta = 1-2 pounds
Amniotic fluid = 2 pounds
Uterine enlargement = 2 pounds
Maternal breast tissue = 2 pounds
Maternal blood flow = 2 pounds
Fluids in maternal tissue = 4 pounds
Maternal fat stores = 7 pounds
How much total weight should I gain?
The amount of weight you should gain depends on your weight before pregnancy. You should gain:
25-35 pounds: If you were a healthy weight before pregnancy.
28-40 pounds: If you were underweight before pregnancy.
15-25 pounds: If you were overweight before pregnancy.
Can gaining too much weight be harmful?
The following are potential problems with gaining too much weight:
Assessment and measurement of the fetus can be more difficult
Backaches
Leg pain
Increased fatigue
Varicose veins
Vaginal delivery becomes difficult or impossible making cesarean section the only option.
Excess weight may be hard to shed
The baby's weight at birth and mother's weight do not always correlate. For example, it is possible for a woman who gains 35 pounds during pregnancy to deliver a 6 pound baby. The quality of food you eat is more significant than the quantity. Also remember pregnancy is not a time to diet because your baby can not survive on calories alone because nutrients are also needed.

I say No. She is gaining far too much weight too quickly. I suggest she call her Doctor on Monday and report the gain. Also, I would state it just as you did: "I have gained 48 pounds in 36 weeks, 10 of it in the last week.
She may indeed be retaining too much water, and diabetes is a possibility as well.
Do not hesitate to call with your concern, and do not delay.
Doctors are VERY busy people and we each need to be PRO-active with our care. If you do not seek help when there may be cause for concern, you may be sorry.
Also, I suggest she be careful with the carbs, salt and sugar. The more weight she gains, the more difficult the delivery. The risk is not worth doing nothing. Eat lots of fruit and vegetables.
Good Luck with the new Baby!

when it's hot out, you swell up ALOT!! After the baby, she'll start sweating out all that extra fluid in there....she'll lose the majority of it in the first few weeks. I gained 60 lbs first pregnancy, and lost it all within 4 months. It can be done. Just don't act like you're concerned about her weightgain, it can be devastating to a wife who already knows she's huge!! Be supportive, buy her some Baskin Robbins!!! Let her have at least a little fun these final few weeks....this is the most miserable time of the entire 9 or 10 months!

I have had 3 children and i always lost my weight before I left the hospital, that might not be normal for everyone but even less since I am overweight, but I would say yes, the baby has the most growth in the last few weeks like maybe a pound a week, remember, its mostly fluid and with the warm weather she might be retaining more fluid then normal....my advice....love her even if she doesn't make 116 again. Her motherhood will make her beauty radiate! congratulations and good luck!!

during your last few weeks of pregnany the baby itself gains 1 pound per week. so obviously your wife would gain more. 10 is alot, but not too much. if her dr. is not worried, i would not be. as long as all of her tests are coming back okay, than i would assume that everything is fine. i started at 130 and was 197 the day i delivered!! best of luck!!

In the last trimester it is okay to gain a considerable amount of weight. However, if your wife is not feeling well, she should go to the doctor. My son's godmother gained 80 pounds with her third child and she went back to normal after having a healthy baby. 50 pounds is not unheard of. :)

Most weight is put on in the last few weeks. Ask the doctor if you have any concerns, she may have gestational diabetes.
