Other people have already said this, but hopefully I can take it a little further. The tag line for the film is "Look Closer." There are a lot of times in our everyday life when we feel like the dark weird things that happen are unique to ourselves. They really aren't. The point of this film is to show what looks like an average American family living in average suburbia and how dysfunctional they are to a fault.

One day the father (Kevin Spacey) snaps and decides to not let his life be ruled by the expectations of society. Life is his and he wants to take it by the horns. He goes on a tear and the first effects of this ripple throughout his family and his neighborhood.

To me (and I want to emphasize that my opinions should not be taken as law, we all make our own choices), the film is about peeling away the exterior we have been looking at all our lives and finding out what is really going on inside ourselves and others.

Some people feel alone in their anxieties and self-perceived weirdness. The tuth is, everyone has something they aren't showing the world. I think this film is supposed to be a message to those who suffer in silence.

Just my opinion

It just shows how messed up even the most normal looking people can be. The most normal person in the movie is the kid that everyone thinks is weird. You can't judge a book by its cover basically.

I think everyone can take a different meaning. One thing I took from it was to just do what you can to be happy. I really liked this movie and Kevin Spacey!

Why does every movie have to have a point? It's art, take it or leave it.
