If you are a city boy looking for excitement, las vegas or chicago
If you are the outdoorsy active type try hiking part of the appalachian trail, the smoky mountains are breathtaking.

Mackinac Island, Michigan.
Do a little time-traveling and you'll find yourself in a place that has never had an automobile accident-- Mackinac Island! They have no cars. All transportation is done through either horse and buggy or bicycle.
They have the best fudge in Michigan, a hotel with the longest porch in the world, an in-tact fort (Fort Michilimackinac... Spelling may be off :P) that was used during the War of 1812, etc. etc.
If you love the outdoors, whenever I visit, my family and I usually rent tandems and bike the 7 miles around the island. There, you can find paths that take you to Arch Rock and other natural wonders.
I really recommend the island, though summer/spring only. It's hard to get a ferry across in the winter because of the ice.
And here's more information on the island itself if you're interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mackinac_Island

If you want to get away from the beach, go to some place in the mountains, like Colorado. There are a bunch of places Vail, Breckenridge, etc. If you want to see the mountains but have more options of stuff to do that doesn't include the outdoors, there are a surprising number of things to do in Denver.

Yep, living here at the beach kind of does it in for you.
One of my favorite getaways AWAY from the beach is Chicago, Atlanta, or way out west, like the Grand Canyon.
A lot of people here at the beach say they love going to Las Vegas, it's like a Disney World for adults.

You must definitely go to the Grand Canyon. Absolutely beautiful. You haven't lived until you've been there.
And I don't suggest Orlando. I live here, and there's nothing to do...unless you want to spend $60 for a theme park ticket.
