This doesn't have to be an either or situation....she can place tooth on a plate on the table in the dining room before she goes to bed ....tell her the tooth fairy knows she's a light sleeper and easily frightened so she doesnt' have to go in her bedroom to get the tooth. My brother was also frightened so my mom used to let him put his tooth under her pillow.....he'd run in the next morning and collect his money.....happy as a lark.
If you really believe it's time she knew, tell her that the magic of losing a tooth is so special that some parents use the tooth fairy to add to the magic. The fairy is actually mommy or daddy trying real hard to make it a magic time. That you do it because you love her and you told her this because you don't want her to be frightened by what is really mommy or daddy. These are fairy tales, and you were trying to make them feel real to her.
Good Luck

Man, that's hard. You hate to throw away that last little bit of childhood. If she's scared, find stories good and happy stories about the toothfairy to read to her during the daytime. If she is still scared, you may have to burst her bubble. I hate to say that.

If your child is afraid of the tooth fairy I don't see a problem in telling her that there is no such thing. I remember my Grandma telling me that the tooth fairy wasn't real when I was about 7 and I was fine with it. I would still put my tooth under my pillow, and I'd still wake up with a dollar under my pillow - even though I knew someone snuck in at night to put it there.
