I don't even recall it being used at 2002 WC korea/japan
plus you don't see it in domestic leagues in europe as well as uefa cup and champions league fixtures
fair play it maybe but sudden death is better than penalty kicks

The Golden Goal rule was in effect during the 2002 World Cup. Remember Italy infamously losing to South Korea, in the Round of 16, despite having played better in the whole match? Just because the Koreans got lucky, they scored a goal in Extra time (15 mins) & completely threw Italy out of the competition.

The Golden Goal rule was introduced to save time, but it was a bad idea becuase all the teams had to do was to score a goal (hence, they were just throwing their bodies at the ball to slog and get a goal). Whereas, without the rule in place, they have to hold on till atleast 15 minutes, meaning they have to attack, but also defend so that the team that has just scored a goal in Extra time, still have to play & not concede goal(s) before the 15 mins are over.

Therefore, in the latter case we have better football played by both sides, as opposed to both just slogging it out in a horrible manner to get the golden goal.

Golden goal is not real soccer. It forces teams to clamp down on defense, fearful of giving up that goal. It made games quite boring to watch. I'm glad it's gone.

I personally love the way FIFA does overtime (OT periods being non-sudden death, then a shootout if need be). I think the NHL should adopt that system.

Turkey vs. Senegal in FIFA 2002 and Italy vs. Korea were decided by Golden Goals. They were the most exciting games ever. I don't know why they rid of it. Horrible move.
