I am trying to write an e-mail to a professor but how to explain that you are interested in his work and research group, and how to ask if you could join there?

Snail mail would be more polite, but just introduce yourself like you would if you were meeting the professor in person. Express your interest in the work being done and if there are any positions open in the project.

Best of luck.

Write the email
Dear Dr. so and so

My name is anna. I am a student in your ---- class. I heard about your research or you mentioned this research. I found it very interesting. You could state I am especially interested in..... I was wondering if I could meet with you to discuss your research.

Sincerely,

Anna

When you go after discussing an article he has written or any other specific questions maybe just about his field in general. Ask if (s)he could use any help around the lab. Offer to volunteer if he does not have a paid position. Thats it and it is pretty simple. If it does not go well find another lab. Some advisors do not have good rapport...typically speaking they are not good advisors or employers.

What's wrong with the way you just said it... it's perfect.
Say that you're interested in his work and ask if you may join them. You might want to include any supporting credentials or qualifications to enhance your request. But all-in-all, I think you've got the right idea.

Just dive right in. Tell him that you are interested, why you are interested, and ask if he can give you pointers on how to go about doing research and joining his group.

its very simple that u write a letter expressing ur interest in his work & likingness for his work group. As u r very keen to join express ur concern for this.Otherwise politely ask that u want to meet him physically if he will allow. Then u can discuss everything when u will meet him.

...Just say,..."I'm extremely interested in your work and would do ANYTHING to become part of your group!!!" ... maybe repeat the word... ANYTHING, a few times...
