Is Sputter a code word for "LEAKING"? check your break chamber. sounds like you need to out of service and I sure hope your are not hauling kids. Hey remember that pesky Air Break test from the DVM this sound like a good time to look it over, and understand why your are getting paid to drive a bus with air breaks.
* With a fully-charged air system (typically 125 p.s.i.), turn off the engine, release the service brake (brakes off), and let the system settle (air gauge needle stops moving). Time the air pressure drop. The loss rate should not be greater than:
— 2 p.s.i. or less in one minute for single vehicles.

Thats your air dryer..
Either you have a small air leak in one of the hoses or the Air Dryer is getting bad.
