Where I work (a state police crime lab) there are two people with biology degrees. One has a masters in Forensic Science and the other doesn't have a masters degree at all. We test drugs. If you want to get into DNA I would recommend a master's in biology with a concentration in Forensics to get the analytical instrumentation experience. If you are interested in toxicology, controlled substances, or blood alcohol, a biology degree should be enough as long as you have enough analytical chemistry to understand the instrumentation. A master's degree will definitely make you more competitive- which is important with as popular as this field has gotten. But you don't HAVE to get a masters in forensics; it could be in biochemistry, biology, chemistry. As long as you know what GC-MS, FTIR, and head space GC are when you're done. Good luck!

I'm pretty sure that you'd ultimately be better off with a Master's degree in forensics. There are a lot of master's degree programs in forensics--just Google a few of them and see what their prerequisite courses are. I'm guessing you'd need chemistry including general, organic and probably analytical, as well as biochemistry. For Biology, I'm guessing that genetics and molecular biology would be particularly helpful, and an entomology course probably couldn't hurt, either. I believe that in the forensics program, you can sort of specialize in the chemical side or the biological side of forensics.

Good luck...

:-) it really is extremely demanding (as I easily have got here upon out through own experience!) yet there are jobs obtainable. He might want to artwork in any component to forensic biology consisting of DNA profiling (thats what i do now) or any type of body fluid artwork consisting of blood splatter prognosis. There are some significant forensic agencies who he might want to artwork for besides the undeniable fact that it really is confusing to break into it, my advice to him will be get as a lot lab experience as he can (I were given mine in a well being center heamatology lab). He would also turn his hand to Scenes of crime artwork for the police if he become so susceptible :-) a good number of oppertunities for persons that artwork flat out :-D good success to him.
