First of all, anyone who thinks that American "made" cars are actually made in America don't have a clue. The new, hot selling Ford Fusion is actually built off the Mazda 6, lol. Australia, Canada and Mexico - buy American and you're buying from those countries. In fact, the Japanese build Honda's and Toyotas all over the midwest. Take a look at the average US CEO salary and tell me they're not out to screw you over, making an average of 253 times the average worker.
What you should buy, for speed would be a twin turbo Supra if you're buying used. Mazda RX8 is an option as always. And the 350z by Nissan is a great sports car for around that price.

Obviously he said Japanese. And as for supporting our economy by buying a American car, that's funny. But, a Honda S2000 is a very ideal car. They cost somewhere in that range(less if anything). The transmission and axel are a perfect setup for a racing car. Honda has a extensive line of everything and anything for a car for performance items( more expensive, buts its Mugen). Honda also has HUGE amounts of performance items not associated with the company. You can get some huge Hp boosts with even just a few items, new computer, turbo, exhaust. I can go on forever, common sense performance parts. The car is so light you'll save a lot of money on parts compared to something that is heavier to achieve the same performance.

The Nissan Skyliner is a favorite in Japan. I had a Toyota Sera, Japanese domestic model. It was cool, fast, gull-wing doors, but the all glass roof was a little hot in the summer.
If you buy a Japanese domestic and import it remember cars are RIGHT HAND drive in Japan.

the only really fast overseas car is the mitsu lancer evo and subaru wrx.
you can add extra mods to make them gain more horsepower.
there's lots of mods for the integra and civic motors, however, I believe you'd get more bang for your buck from a wrx. mitsu was on the verge of bankruptsy, and parts for them are hard to find.
The faster car, will always be an American Made engine.

Honda S2000 if you want a convertible. If you want a hard top go with the Nissan 350z...both are excellent cars for under 30k.
