I was wondering, if my grandmother could have a couple of her friends come over and take a furnace out and put a new one in without having to hire out contractors?

I'd say, as long as her friends are competant, sure. I had a buddy of mine swap out my furnace. It took him about an hour, and thats because he had to fashion a sheetmetal hood to connect the new furnace to the old ductwork (new furnace was shorter). This guy does this kind of work for a living though, so he knew what he was doing.
If your grandmother's friends don't know what they are doing, you can always ask around at Home Depot to find a HVAC guy to do it as a side job. As a side job, you're probably looking at $50.00

You could help her decide the best type of new furnace to install because there are many modern high efficiency furnace types that could save her a lot of money in monthly utility bills. She may have propane or natural gas, oil and electric power options to choose from depending on her current heating and cooling system. Does she have a forced air duct system with central air conditioning or possibly a baseboard hot water heating system with window air conditioner units? If she lives in the far northern USA or Canada, she may not need central air conditioning. So I suggest you talk to some neighbors who have recently installed new furnaces and see what equipment and local HVAC contractors they chose.

Sure, and while they're at it maybe they can do open-heart surgery on her if she needs that as well. C'mon, we're talking fires, explosions, and great risk of personal injury here! I know of many horror stories that were the result of a lack of expertise on the part of friends who were just trying to do a favor(translate that to making a few bucks), for a friend. Do the right, and safe, thing and call an HVAC company. Egads!

That'll throw granny's back out quickly and you'll be stuck getting her "necessities" for her.

Rather than having her and her friends remove the furnace, have them knit each other sweaters. She'll still be getting her own Malox, Polygrip, and Depends.

you will get what you pay for. being cheap usually doesn't pay off in the long run most times it just adds extra costs to fix the problems from a bad install. Good luck
