Well, I love classic books. I'll give you a few suggestions.

1. The Picture of Dorian Gray
Oscar Wilde
(Dorian Gray is deathly handsome. He becomes so caught up into his looks that he sells his soul to the devil for eternal beauty.)

2. Jude The Obscure
Thomas Hardy
(Jude's greatest dream is to attend Christminster, a prestigious university. Unfortunately, his social status isn't accepted, i.e. he's poor. He falls in love with his cousin, Sue Bridehead and they begin an adulterous affair only to become shunned by society.)

3. Wives and Daughters
Elizabeth Gaskell
(A stunning tale about Molly Gibson, daughter to Dr. Gibson. Her mother died when she was young so her father eventually remarries. Her new stepsister, Cynthia, gets all attentions because of her great beauty, leaving Molly with insecurities.)

Jane Eyre by: Charlotte Bronte
Emma by: Jane Austen
Othello by: William Shakespeare
Anna Karenina by: Leo Tolstoy

Hmm....I would recommend:

1984 by George Orwell (although I'm reading it for my AP English course, it's a truly wonderful book)

Animal Farm by George Orwell

The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling

Those are just a few books that I can think of at the moment. If you're choosing from a reading list or just can't find a book yet, go to www.barnesandnoble.com and search for the book, that way you can also read the synopsis or an excerpt, if available.

Well since you're only in 9th grade, I would consider checking into "Little Women", "The Call of the Wild", "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", or "Born Free".
While 1984 and The Picture of Dorian Gray are AWESOME books; you would have to be a pretty advanced reader.

If you are a smart 9th grader, Candide by Voltaire (it would impress your teacher)
or:
Captains Courageous, Rudyard Kipling
The Arabian Nights, Andrew Lang

Good luck!
