There are alot of factors in this scenerio that come into play.

Firstly if its a man and a woman is the man a gentleman and going to let the lady pass first?

Secondly if its a male with a male I guess the more agressive/confident, perhaps better dressed one might intimidate the other by looking like he is not going to allow the other to pass him so the other more submissive/caring one/has manners gives in.

Thirdly if its two women maybe the one better dressed say LIKE an executive compared to someone in just normal clothes, maybe the woman not as well dressed has low self esteem and that would cause her to give in and allow the other woman to go first. Maybe one of them is more considerate than the other. As in one is single/selfish and the other might be married with kids/has more patience.

What if one is elderly or disabled? Although this should come into play, these days it doesnt. I speak from experience my niece is in a wheelchair and I care for her 24/7. These days no one will stand aside for a wheelchair, people are just so ignorant. They think they can walk through quicker and instead of preferring to wait they will brush/push through even when we were already half way through the limited space. We have had so many inconsiderate people just walk straight out of isles and shops right infront of the moving wheelchair also.

To answer your question it boils down to morality, manners and patience. Unfortunately these are dwindling in our day and age like water pouring down a drainpipe.

I hope I have been of help!

More a question of courtesy than psychology. As when two cars are driving down a narrow road, each moves as far to the right as possible (left in Europe). This is the easiest solution.

If one must yield:
-the one carrying something, or the heaviest object, should be allowed to continue, or
-the person with the disability, or
-an obviously pregnant woman, or
-whoever arrived first

If none of the above apply, then one person should allow the other to go first, regardless of gender. Usually a passive person will let a more assertive or aggressive person take the "right of way." An aggressive person either doesn't care or will assume that he/she has the right of way.

Things always have a way of working out. The important thing to remember is that if someone doesn't give you right of way, you should not allow it to bother you.

The answer lies in the geography you are in, in the middle east- if it is a man and a woman walking towards each other the woman yields, in the west it is the other way around. If we are talking about the West, if two people of the same sex are walking toward each other and one has to yield, usually if the other person is apparently older, then the younger one should yield, if they are both the same age usually there is an uncomfortable moment, and whoever really has no time to waste yields and let the other one pass with a look on his face saying-Hurry up buddy-this way although he/she yields, he/she also saves face.

I always move to make sure the stinky idiot does not rub on me. If you are not worried about germs then by all means hold your ground and remember there is nothing more important than never surrendering to another human and showing signs of kindness which of course the deep seeded barbarian in most of us will take this as a sign of weakness instead of kindness.
