Go to Dell.com, then opt for Dell Outlet and buy a refurbished Inspiron ... great price and great machine.

I am typing this on an Inspiron 9300 with a 17 inch wide screen that came with a 1 year warranty and tech support ... no complaints.

Opt for RAM and the highest video card you can afford. It makes all of the bells and whistles of all applications run as smooth as possible.

I have nothing bad to say about Dell, works fine for me. I guess if your going to use a lot of programs or games that need a lot of power it might not be the best? All I know is I've yet to have problems with my Dell inspiron.

If I were you, I would go for HP because it is cheap and also very reliable. It delivers optimum performance with Windows XP professional. Look for a laptop nothing less than 512 MB of Ram and at east 2.0 GHZ and about 70 GB of Space.
