I don't know if I understood your question.
People's dreams have many motivations, or lots of things insides a person's mind are expressed in a dream.
It's a little complicated to explain well about this, but I will try to make it short.
Everyone, has fears, desires, worries, wishes in mind, and they are built in our head, during our life experiences...our brain goes absorving, colecting everything, than he (brain) try to acomodates all those information collected in our brain, seems our brain, wants to save all, he (brain) knows in the future, we will need to use those informations, and he wants to keep them, in case we need to use it. Our brain doesn't distinguish one thing from another, he doesn't go and say...oops, this is trash, let's put in the garbage....he doesn't do that at all ! When our mind get too full, our brain, start to delete things. Like we were in a sinking boat, he (brain) goes and start to throw to the water everything he can from stopping the boat to sink, on times like this, we don't care on throwing away something value, we want to survive, so our brain. This happens, when we get too tired, stressed, or we experienced a trauma, that's why we forget things.
Traumas and blackouts, happens, when the information collected from our brain is too extensive and heavy, thats he throws away a part of it and keeps as musch as he can keep, so when we recover, we will remember the experience, because he never throws away everything, he keeps save it in somewhere.
All the information collected on our brain, tends to be saved by associations. That's why some people have better memory than others, they can easely associate things, but there are techniques to improve our memory. How many times did you get yourself, going to do something and when you get there, you forget completly what you were going to do?...most people, and you too, might had walked back when you start your action to rememeber what you were going to do, and this most of the time works.
Now, going back to your dream. I think you said, had a dream where the owner of the company you work told you were fired.
Something you experienced in your work, messaged to your brain, the experience of you beeing fired. Something happened at your work for your sense the feeling of being fired, maybe a previous experience in another work, pushed your brain to make this association.
The dream you had probably is result of a preocupation, maybe you are worried about your work, maybe not, but you might be worried about something.
Most of ours nightmare are associated with ours fears.
Sometimes we have wonderful dreams, as a results of our desires.
It's very hard to explain about dreams, people's minds is very complex, even a great psychiatrist, will have difficulty on explaining your dream....most of doctors (good ones), don't explain dreams, because they know, the only one whom can do this is yourself, you are the only one capable of doing that and get the most closest anwers, because only you "knows" what is inside your mind. A specialist, can only help you have more knowlege about yourself, in order to get aswers for your questions. More we know about ourselves, more capable we become of making better choices and decisions.
Those books about dreams interpretations is useless...don't go by those books that says a snake, for example, represents death, and you will die, or smeone you know will die...that's tolatlly crap...maybe it's good for entertaiment, but its not to be taken for real.
