i would go with a dog. get a puppy, they are cool to have. then they grow and if you get a lab, they become big and be a kind of guard dog. i think a dog would be best. cats i dont really like. they dont do much. but with a dog you can teach them tricks and have fun with them.

Cooperation is good.
Before taking any advice on here - and some good suggestions on dog breeds - determine if a dog is even the best choice for your family.
For example - how many people - adults and kids? How old are the kids? How active is the family and is there an interest in the pet participating or staying home? Do you own or rent your home (BIG factor there especially for larger dogs). How much can you afford on a monthly basis to support your pet? What experience do you have for caring for a pet? How much effort are you willing to put into training, selection and proper things the pet needs? Indoor or outdoor pet? What kind of area do you live in? (apartment, house etc?)
If you will be gone on the weekends on a regular basis camping and such and don't want the pet to go with a dog wouldn't be the best idea...there are several pets that can go for a day or two without human attention - mice, rats, snakes, lizards, rabbits.
If you have very small children that can affect what kind of pet they are comfortable with. Often what seems gentle isn't - a rabbit can kick, scratch and bite and a small child can be really hurt.
A dog is a great pet but it depends on your family too. An active family who wants the dog to be part of things would do well with an active breed like border collies or terriers.
Remember the basic provisions add up...I have seen many a person spend $60+ on a free rabbit - cage, feeder, water bottle, etc etc etc plus feed. An aquarium of fish is an interesting environment to watch but they aren't warm and cuddly like a kitten or puppy.
Dogs aren't for everyone. If you aren't dedicated to training and teaching manners, obedience, boundaries and understanding the canine mind a dog may not be the best choice...it's not difficult but consistent training is needed.
Take a hard look at your situation then find a pet with care and need requirements that fit into that.
I'm partial to dogs but they aren't for everyone. I also like snakes but some people are squeamish at the mention of a snake.

Well it all depends. If you want a pet to play with then get a dog. If you do choose a dog you have to decide: Do i want a working dog or not.If so somthing along the lines of a Golden Reteiver might be best.If you want a little fluffy-dog then you might want somthing like a Tea-Cup Pomeranian. And dont allways go by the reputation. I met this Pitbull who is the nicest dog.

If you want a pet that is laid back, easily housetrained, etc, get a cat. If you want a pet that you can do things with, go on walks with you, do agility, play frisbee with, get a dog. A dog needs a lot more attention than a cat, but makes the best companion. If these do not suit you, maybe fish or a bird.

Are you wanting a inside or outside pet? If you have the room, donkeys are the most wonderful pet. Not for people with young children unless you watch the children closely.
Donkeys are very intelligent and affectionate.

Golden retriever, the ultimate pet for the whole family. They are very smart, very cooperative, and love everyone, especially kids.

Art, you and your family look like the kind of people who would enjoy dogs. My family has always had good luck with mutts (mixed breeds), but if you want a purebred dog, go with something like a retriever, either labrador or golden.

Well Art you look like the type of person that should have a dog, Black labs are excellent family dogs, extremely good with children...They are somewhat laid back, they love to swim, go for walks and love to go for car rides...Their temperment is NOT vicious, although they will guard their home, and protect their owners...
enjoy
