The president as an individual has very little power in a Democracy. His power rests in a congress which supports his agenda, (For the most part) This applies to any political party.

I think the most unfortunate developement in the past half century is the polarization of the American population by the political parties. This actually may have began with Roosevelt, in the Great Depression, with promises, and a congress which supported his agenda. When the Democratic party held the majority for approximately 40 years, most of our social programs were enacted. When some of those programs became a burden to taxpayers, the opposition promised to make changes. Key word, PROMISES. We are seeing this happening again and one or the other party will make "New Promises"

NO, Hell No, I would not want to be President. It's against my personal principles to kiss ****. Think about a freshman congress person. They can do nothing that they may have promised without kiss **** of those already there. Examples too lengthy to write here.

Quite frankly, NO WAY!! Anyone who wants to be in public service is either a masochist, or too power hungry to care.

To answer the last question, if I was put into office (and it would have to be under the same circumstances Gerald Ford did), my very first decision would be to give funding towards social services and make sure that more jobs are created in the US, and start modeling our society to the rest of Western society. I would considerably lower the price of health care, and would work to get an ammendment passed where health care becomes a basic human right. Then I would abolish the death penalty and would create a justice system that is TRULY FAIR to everyone involved, so that there are no wrongful convictions or wrongful acquittals. Then I would change the laws so that it would be easier to immigrate legally. I could go on and on, but I'm sure that you get the picture.

Yes, because our presidents over the last thirty years have turned our government into a corrupt Joke. I have not once in my life time of forty one years seen a president that was for the people. They tell you what you want to hear, then when they get elected they forget about you, and take on their own agenda for world power.
I don't care about world power. I only care about American Power. There are more than applicable ways to control our borders without punishing the American people with civil rights violations and out ragous tax increases to support these criminal acts against the people.
The American people should not be punished because they were attacked. Our ocean borders need to be completely under American only control. Our schools, and education need to be put back on track, and industry must be put back in it's place, or out of the country. Maybe then the real American Independent Business men can have a chance.
The war tax from 1812 needs to be lifted, and Americans deserve a president that is really for the people. It was the people that built this nation's wealth, we deserve to prosper from it.
With all that said, I would not qualify. I am of limited school education, I am poor, and I come from a troubled background. No crime, just lots of depression, from lots of abuse. I lived on the streets, but I did not work them. I spent my free hours learning as much about politics, and real American issues as I could. I guess you could say I am a self educated American. The school over crowding problem is not a new problem either.

I would do it for the good of America. I see many problems with this country that I know my ideas and my vision would repair. I would be president for one term because if I couldnt get it done in 4 years I couldnt get it done. I would abolish the IRS and make a consumption tax the only tax. I would enforce the laws of immigration and protect the wages of all working Americans. I would make welfare receipients participate in a work program of some type. I would increase welfare fraud investigations and make sure those frauding the government are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I would watchdog corporations that got welfare from the government that they are using it to grow the economy and to hire new employees. I would institute a health assurance plan in the schools, nutrition and exercise as I believe health assurance makes health insurance less of a necessity. I would created medical savings accounts for those in the workforce to help them pay for their own health care. After that it would be hour 2 and Id have some lunch , a bbq on the lawn with a few of regular hard working Americans and small business owners and entrepenuers. For those would be my advisors. I dont want to be President but I would if given the opportunity to return this country to greatness. Id also learn to spell receipeints
lol

It is interesting most of your answerers don't want the job. I know what I'd like to do - change the economics of Renewable Energy. I also know it will not happen, not because the oil industry or any other industry has a vested interest in it not happening. The masses have believed the environmentalist that it is cheap & when they find out it is expensive they are totally disillusioned. The government has thrown out the bait to those that can afford to pay for their energy bill up front & there are few takers. Expect the economy of 1850 by 2050 based on availablity of energy.

I'd love to be the President. This country is falling apart and it could use some high quality duct tape. However, it seems that according to the press, nothing the President does is right... Personally, when I make a decision, I don't give a crap what anyone else has to say about it...I'd be a dangerous president. If I run, don't elect me. But being President has its up sides and down sides...it just depends which sides pull your strings. I'd like to be President, but the country wouldn't.

Absolutely NOT. I could never play the politics that is required to run for the office. Until there is REAL campaign reform and everyone running for office has the exact amount of money to spend, no lobbying, no money from corporations and equal amounts of time are given to each candidate by the media, it will be the same shame we have always had. It gets worse every year but I still vote!

Yes. If the opportunity feasibly and realistically presented itself I would take it. And you asked, 'why'? Because I believe I can make this country better, and do it in a way the American people understand and the world commumity would not fear. I wish I had done things a little different when I was younger, that is, choosing to pursue politics rather than business.

Yes, why not try to make this country better. I have no idea what the first thing I would do is, but probably try to do something to rid the country of the national debt or severely curtail our dependency on oil. The true first action would most likely be getting countless briefings.

I wouldn't, the real President is protraid as stupid. He really isn't to blame for some things... There are people in the system that control other actions, if half of these a**holes that think this is all Bush's fault paid attention in history class maybe things wouldn't be this way.
