I would ask him o say it in plainer terms.The way you phrased it is confusing to me.

Hard to say? It kind of depends on the context of the conversation. If it was said in a sweet moment, I would probably say that I agree and to need someone because you love them is great. If it was said in an argument to prove a point - it might be different.

I would catch the first part, "i don't love you" and smack you. The phrasing seems off, while i understand the sentiment, i am not a fan of that exact phrasing. Instead of trying to explain, i would just say "i love you very much and want to be with you forever" it will get you out of trouble real fast.
