It's a survival trait from mankinds long past.
In periods of drought and famine, males are capabale of nursing. That doubles the number of food sources for baby when times are tough.
Men don't lactate now because of social "norms" rather than biological restrictions.

When we start out as embryos, we are all basically female. If the embryo has the Y chromosome, then male sex organs will start to develop. The clitoris develops into the penis and a bunch of other changes occur. So although nipples serve no useful function on men, they occur nevertheless because they were "original equipment" before the male sex organs developed.

Because for a certain period of development a fetus is neither male nor female but is of neutral gender before the Y-chromosome or double X start adding their, err, specificities. Nipples are developed prior to the, uh, gender split and so men have em even though we have no real reason for them.

All embryos start out as automatically female until the sexual hormones kick in a few months into the pregnancy. Since having nipples poses no real disadvantage to male mammals, it has not been selected out by nature.

When we are conceived, we are neither male nor female; we all start out the same, with nipples, and with organs which will develop into either ovaries for females or testicles for males, according to the effects of which chromosome combo we inherited from our parents.
That's just what happens..

They would look funny w/out them. :) I believe it has to do with development in the womb. We all start out kinda the same, and then gender decides which other parts develop.

all fetus' develop the same way...the hormones determine the difference at the appropriate time of development and the secondary sexual characteristics are caused again by hormones at puberty.....boys do not develop breasts.....and girls do not develop facial hair...it's all in the plan.
