Well if he was pitching like he did his rookie year, I would say ok. That game he pitched against the Astros where he struck out 20 batters was awesome! However, paying one man millions to do almost nothing most of the time is crazy when there are super hard working more deserving people out there. For example...doctors that say lives! But hey what are you gonna do??

Sometimes athletes get paid alot of money based on promise. Sometimes those players get hurt and then they look overpaid. Part of the problem is how he was used early on in his career. Overwork too young can really mess up a pitcher's career. It's the Cub's fault, not Wood's. Look at what happened to the great starting pitchers the A's had in the early 80s, after a couple years they were all gone. Mark Fidrych in the 70s. There have been many stories like this. Don't hate on Wood for how he was used. It's not his fault, okay, maybe it's a little his fault.

At least he's a bargain compared with Darren Dreifort. Dreifort was a highly touted pitcher for the Dodgers, but he kept getting hurt. Still, the Dodgers gave him a 5-year, $55 million deal in December 1998 (right after they gave Kevin Brown 7 years and $105 million). Dreifort won 48 games in his career, 8 of which came during that $55 million contract.

To Bill Gates that's just pennies to him. But I wish I had $30,875,000. Just a million dollars for me will do me good. Kerry Wood better not spend it all because I think his career is over with all the injuries he's had.

Kerry Wood = Barely could.
As in, he barely could throw a pitch anymore without breaking something.

I think that he is an extremely good player than has had some extreme bad luck with injuries...he may have been overpaid for what they have gotten for him...but there are several worse cases of overpaying players...for the talent he has when he is healthy...i think he is still a bargain.

At $441,071.43 per win, or $27,840.40 per inning - he's a little pricey. A long injury history and Dusty Baker as the manager, recipe for disaster.
