If a group of people get marooned on an island or travel to Mars and start a colony, will they develop their own specialized accent?

I've been to several different colonies that used to be British countries, and it seems Australia is the only one with people who have mostly retained their accents..no, most people don't have Steve Irwin-esque accents! The Northeast of the United States also seems to have people who have some remnant of their old world accents and mannerisms...

Have there been any studies or research?

it is a seperateness thing. I think the marronned people would develop their own accent. Think about trendy words that get passed around schools, or how you hear someone say something differently and think it sounds cool so you start saying it. I think a good analogy would be evolution, only of languages. someone cant say mommy with a long o so they say mummy and it sticks... something like that.
