Most important would be to see if the alternator can handle the extra load of an AC unit. You'd be surpirsed that vehicles where AC isn't stock sometimes don't have the ability to add one without changing for a new alternator and maybe even some wiring.

The dollar figure is close. Parts wise you need a compressor, different belt, condensor, discharge and suction lines, orfice tube or expansion valve, reciever drier, electrical controls, evaporator, possibly thermostat control, and freon. And especially a good and honest mechanic, to install. 96' should have had air? Also can buy after market 1 piece units but they take up alot of floor space.

you need a compressor, and hoses, also the cooling part that goes infront of the radiator. Also mounting brackets, a belt and pullys to align the rest of your system
