Common sense has never in any period of history been anything approaching common. Notice the amount of people who explain something by giving an example from TV or a movie.

It has become less common.
Pure speculation.... younger parents, a move to city type life where mistakes are less dangerous (day to day chores, don't stand behind the horse type stuff), less parental time in real life experiences, single parent families (not that the parent does not love or try), an overall me me me society?
Farm kids, and people like myself that had a parent who had a business, had to help out. This results in more responsibility and usually more common sense.

nothing. it is just that you were under the misconception that its common. common sense is hard to find.
common sense is not as common as you think it is.

i grew up with 2 siblings with genius iq's and me with common sense. i have been concerned about their future many times. i dont know what to tell you but give me common sense over genius anyday!

It died..became extinct. I notice this while watching TV. You will see a commercial with say A guy getting out of his truck to toss a fish in the other direction to keep a bear from attacking and it says "DO NOT ATTEMPT"..well DUH.
